How to Reset Your Amazon Password (Safely)

Resetting an Amazon password is a 3-screen process, but skipping the security review afterwards is a common mistake. This guide walks through the reset and the cleanup that should follow it.

Start the reset

From the sign-in screen, click Forgot your password? Enter the email or phone number on the account. Amazon emails or texts a recovery link or code — usually within 30 seconds.

Verify your identity

Open the link or paste the code. If the account has 2SV enabled, expect a second prompt for an authenticator-app code. If you no longer have access to either factor, Amazon will offer the account recovery path that asks you to upload ID. Allow 24-48 hours for that route.

Choose a strong password

Aim for 14+ characters, ideally a passphrase made of unrelated words. Avoid reusing a password from another site — Amazon is a frequent target for credential-stuffing attacks where leaked passwords from other breaches are tried automatically.

A password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager) handles generation and autofill. If you do not use one, write the new password on paper and store it somewhere physically secure.

After the reset

Visit Your Account → Login & security and:

• Review the active sessions and sign out of any device you do not recognize.
• Confirm the email and phone on file are still yours.
• Enable Two-Step Verification if it was not already on.
• Check Your Orders for any purchases you did not make. Report immediately if you find one.
