How to Track an Amazon Order (Every Status Explained)
Amazon shows several different status labels on the same order between purchase and delivery. Most are self-explanatory, but a few — like "Shipping soon" or "Out for delivery" with no map — confuse first-time shoppers. Here is what every label means and what to do when reality does not match.
Find your tracking page
On the web, open Returns & Orders from the header. On the app, tap the receipt icon at the bottom. Each order has a Track package button that opens the live tracking page — including, for many regions, a real-time map once the package is on the local route.
If the order is fulfilled by a third-party seller via a non-Amazon courier, the same tracking page links out to the carrier (UPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail, etc.).
What each status means
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Order placed | Payment authorized, order in Amazon's system. |
| Preparing for shipment | Warehouse staff are picking and packing your items. |
| Shipping soon | Packed and queued for pickup by the carrier; usually picks up within a few hours. |
| Shipped | In the carrier's network. Tracking scans now appear. |
| Out for delivery | On the truck or with the courier for today's round. |
| Delivered | Marked as handed over or left at the address. |
| Delayed in transit | Carrier reported an exception — weather, missed connection, or local issue. |
When the order is delayed
Amazon's delivery dates are estimates with a built-in buffer. A package that misses the promised date but is still in transit usually arrives within 24-48 hours.
If the promised date has passed and tracking has not updated in 48 hours, go to the order page and click Problem with order. For Prime members, eligible delayed shipments may credit one extra month of Prime or a small account credit — but only if requested via that link.
"Delivered" but missing
This is the most common Amazon issue and there is a standard, almost-always-successful playbook:
- Wait 48 hours. Carriers sometimes scan a package as delivered up to a day before they actually drop it off, particularly during peak season.
- Check delivery photos. Most Amazon Logistics drivers take a photo when leaving the package. The photo is on the tracking page — it often shows the package on a different door, with a neighbor, or in a hidden spot.
- Ask people in the household and check usual hiding places (porch, side gate, behind plants, garage).
- Contact Amazon via Customer Service → A delivery, order, or return. Replacements and refunds for Amazon-fulfilled lost packages are usually approved on the spot.
Multi-package orders
Large orders ship from several warehouses. The order page will show several tracking lines, each with its own status. A single late item does not affect the others. Use the Group this delivery option at checkout next time if you would rather wait for everything to arrive together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track an Amazon order without logging in?
You need to log in to see the live tracking map and delivery photos, but the carrier tracking number (once shipped) can be checked directly on UPS, FedEx, etc.
What does "Late tracking, but on the way" mean?
Carrier tracking scans are delayed, but Amazon's system still expects the package to be moving. Usually resolves within 24 hours.
Will I get a refund if my package is late?
Standard delivery delays are not automatically refunded. Guaranteed-delivery promises (Amazon Day, Same-Day, specific Prime guarantees) can be eligible — request through the order page.
