How to Sell on eBay: Step-by-Step

Listing on eBay takes about ten minutes per item, and most decisions can be changed later. But three — category, format, and title keywords — determine whether the listing gets seen at all.

Before you list

Search for the exact item or a near-equivalent on eBay first. Filter to Sold listings in the sidebar — this shows actual sale prices, not aspirational asking prices. The median sold price is your realistic ceiling.

Create the listing

Click Sell in the top right. Type or paste the product name; eBay will suggest a category and product attributes. Picking the right category matters: misfiled items get fewer views and may be removed.

Photos and title

Use the first image slot for a clean, well-lit shot on a neutral background. Add 4-8 additional photos covering wear, serial numbers, accessories, and the box. Phone cameras with natural light beat studio setups for trust.

For the title, fit as many high-intent keywords as you can in 80 characters: brand, model, size/colour, condition, year. No "L@@K", "WOW", or emoji — they signal amateur listings.

Fees and pricing

eBay charges an insertion fee after your free monthly listings are used up, plus a final value fee (typically ~13% in most categories) on the sale price + shipping. Always model fees into your asking price.

Shipping setup

Use calculated shipping for heavy or oversized items and flat-rate for predictable parcels. eBay's discounted shipping labels (eBay Labels in the US, eBay Delivery elsewhere) are almost always cheaper than buying postage from a post office.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get paid on eBay?

Through eBay Managed Payments, funds typically reach your bank within 1-3 business days after the buyer confirms delivery or the protection window passes.

Can I cancel a listing?

Yes, before the first bid. Once bids are placed, you can only end the listing with a valid reason (item lost, broken, etc.) and may receive a strike if abused.
